A lady I work with purchased the 4300 I traded last spring for the 4600 as a birthday present for her husband (candidate for wife of the year wouldn't you agree). Before she purchased the tractor she asked me if I had any problems and I mentioned the turf tearing problems with the old MFWD axle. She mentioned it to the dealer who told her that if for any reason she wasn't satisfied with the old axle Deere would replace it. Now that she and her husband have had an opportunity to use it they decided to get the new axle installed. The dealer told her that there is a problem with the new axles that affects the front attachments such as the snowblower and front mounted broom. The dealer recommended she wait until Deere decides whether another change to the axle is forthcoming. Has anyone heard of this problem? I have a new 4400 on the way (build date of May 6 I believe) and would like to know if there might be a delay.

While I don't know of problems with the new axle, does she plan on using a front snowblower or broom? What is the downside of having the new axle put on? If there is new, new one - have them replace it again. ....

I am looking to buy a 4300 4wd sitting at the dealer. After reading about different problems with the front axle, could anybody tell me what they are and how can you tell which axle the 4300 has, and, which one I should avoid. Thanks ....

J.Noel, use the search function at the top of the CTB page and do two searches: one on "axle" and one on "scuff". You will find an incredible history on the front axle issues and descriptions to tell them apart. ....

I think the axle thing was fixed, but check out the loosening left wheel bolt thread. Someone's suggesting wiring in the bolts, that's the last thing I would want to do on a $20,000+ machine.

The front axle fix went into production over a year ago on the 4300 and 4400 tractors because my 4400 was manufactured in March, 2000 and has the new axle. By the way, this front axle setup performs extremely well. Obviously when Deere engineers had to fix the previous one they weren't going to cut any corners second time around. The front tires turn very tight with no scuffing in 2WD and barely perceptible in 4WD on sand even at full lock, better than any 4WD I've seen before. The loosening wheel bolts on the left side seems to be a widely varying situation according to reports on this board: some tractors it happens repeatedly, some only until tightened once or twice, and on some (like mine) it never happens even once. ....

I know exactly what they are talking about. I own a 4400 and my friend has a 4300. He has a snowthrower and had this very problem after he got the new axel. The mechanic at the dealer made something to get around the problem. I believe the drive shaft came in contact with the torsion bar when turning, don't qoute me. I know it rendered the snowmachine useless. Hope this helps. ....
